Rebirth of the Las Sendas Golf Club is
complete. Less than a year after purchasing the
property, the new ownership group, Lloyd &
Wayne McBean along with 3 partners (2
Canadians and one Arizona native) fulfilled their
goal of constructing additional amenities and
now operating the facilities as they were
originally intended.
“Robert Trent Jones, Jr. wasn’t limited in his
budget with respect to the original construction.
There was over $14 million spent on the original
course design and amenities. The trouble was
that the golf course was built at the world-class
level, but then the entire development went
bankrupt in ’94.” explains Lloyd. A scaled down
clubhouse was made available just to get the
course open and operating in ‘95, and it stayed
that way until our acquisition in November 2009.
The list of improvements costing more than 4
million dollars is long and includes a newly renovated and expanded clubhouse,
featuring 3 unique restaurant operations and
a kitchen with an additional 1000 sq ft added
to its original size. The cart paths were
completed; sewer and water including
electricity were brought onto the golf
course in order to complete construction of
the air conditioned comfort station and The
Oasis Snack Shack located between the 3rd
hole and the 14th tee. The latest building to
open was the new Pro Shop which is located
next to the clubhouse and offers private
locker rooms for the growing membership.
You will also find a new halfway house and
public restrooms located in the building next
to the 10th tee box. New Club storage
facilities, shoe shine room and a brand new
cart fleet featuring the latest in GPS
complete the amenities all completed in the
first year of operations.
The previous restaurant was very small and
offered a limited menu. The community now
boasts more than 13,500 people, so the
McBeans created three distinctly different
restaurant operations with different menus.
“The Las Sendas residents have been very
supportive of the new operations” said Lloyd, “we are trying to meet and exceed
their expectations but one thing is for sure,
they have wanted these facilities for a very
long time”. A new and expanded kitchen
now supports Bogey’s - a white linen Prime
steak and seafood house seating more than
100 people with valet and limousine service;
The Rusty Putter - a pub which has a
broader and more family-oriented menu; and
Viewpoint Patio which offers live
entertainment Wednesday thru Saturday and
has the best views on the mountain.
Memberships are available at this time and
once 350 are sold the course will close to
the public. The restaurants will always
remain open to the public and Las Sendas
residents. All memberships are 100%
refundable and there is no one on a waiting
list to be refunded. Another important note
is that the new ownership group bought the
golf course and paid for all the renovations
with their own money! The club has no
debt, no mortgage and promises to keep the
golf course from being leveraged. This
certainly provides promise of longevity in
this challenging time.
Even before the renovation, Las Sendas was
acclaimed by avid golfers and sports writers. It was ranked the 10th most challenging and
one of the top 100 courses in the nation
according to two ZAGAT Surveys. The
land where Las Sendas is located also has
some Wild West history. It was owned by
Tom Mix, silent film star, in the late 1930’s.
He and John Wayne used to ride horses in
these hills.
